+# Behavior Delete extension design — 2026-09-12
+
+Read-only investigation on `codex/behavior-authoring-20260910`, clean working tree at inspection. Root owns issue 15 coordination, changes and executable verification. No compilation or runtime claims are made here.
+
+## Recommended behavior
+
+Use the existing confirmed semantic deletion path for both Delete and Shift+Delete on persisted process/scenario objects. These projections have no independent diagram placements. The keyboard deletes the selected occurrence, lifeline or persisted link, never the referenced work/performer/exchange/scenario definition. Do not add hidden-occurrence storage. Explain this in the derived interaction contract and shortcut hints. No core command/schema change is needed.
+
+- Process action/exchange/control/sequence-reference node: delete its Occurrence ID. Owned descendants and incident SequenceLink/ContextualLink records follow existing cascade rules. The referenced reusable work, exchange or sequence remains. Existing evidence: `behavior/topology/direct_tests.rs::direct_process_reconnect_delete_and_reorder_preserve_other_paths_and_sources` already asserts work/exchange survival and exact bundle undo, but does not exercise keyboard/App.
+- Process persisted SequenceLink or ContextualLink: delete relation ID; preserve both endpoints. Ordered/implied paths are a projection of ordered steps, not records and must never map to deletion of an endpoint. Hit logic currently uses persisted `edges`; preserve this separation.
+- Scenario message/action/state/scenario-use: delete Occurrence ID. Reusable exchange, action, state or referenced scenario and other uses remain. Deleting an asynchronous/synchronous call may clear reply_to on retained replies according to existing reference cleanup; do not invent additional cascade.
+- Scenario fragment: delete its occurrence and owned branches/nested occurrences; never referenced definitions. Branch deletion removes its descendants and prunes the fragment branches list.
+- Scenario participant/lifeline: delete Lifeline ID, preserve represented actor/component. Existing semantics retain scenario occurrences and clear affected sender/receiver/lifeline references and scenario-use bindings. This can expose incomplete messages for repair; confirmation/help should describe it accurately rather than promise all incident messages vanish.
+- `MessageStyle::Delete` / palette label `Delete participant` is a modeled destruction message, unrelated to editor Delete.
+- Blank owner/background and non-visible stale selection: no model deletion.
+
+## Key risk: qualified process selections
+
+`app/process_canvas.rs` SelectQualified resolves the endpoint, stores the first reference occurrence in `app.selected`, and separately stores the qualified ContextAddress. Pressing Delete against app.selected would unexpectedly remove the outer reference when the visibly selected item is an expanded nested definition occurrence. Smallest safe extension refuses keyboard deletion for a live qualified selection, explaining that the user can open the definition to edit it (or select the outer reference itself to remove that use). Do not silently remove the outer reference or the shared definition child. Add explicit test with two uses of the same reusable sequence.
+
+## Existing paths and smallest extension
+
+1. `behavior/canvas_workspace/viewport.rs`: actual Focusable input owner already blocks child keyboard events while unfocused/disabled, tracks pointer click, resets on window focus loss, and supports F6/Tab via `focus.rs`. Reuse it unchanged unless mounted tests identify an actual focus issue. Avoid a global Delete subscription and avoid replacing it with cursor-inside heuristics.
+2. Process `behavior/topology/direct.rs::Graph::input` (around 580), scenario `behavior.rs::Scene::update` (around 1775): add Delete KeyPressed arms with no repeat, modifiers exactly empty or SHIFT, editable Select tool, no pending press/source, visible selected projected object, and live context. Publish new `CanvasEvent::Remove(Context, Id)` variants. Child keyboard has already passed viewport focus validation, and therefore must work when pointer moved outside while focus remains. Do not require cursor visibility for keyboard.
+3. Process `topology/direct.rs::CanvasEvent` and scenario `scenario.rs::CanvasEvent`: include Remove in context() matching. Scenario projection has boxes/lines/rows/lanes; process Graph has nodes/edges. Use actual rendered IDs for eligibility and reject owner, synthetic or qualified previews. Do not implement eligibility as only `project.contains(id)`.
+4. `app/process_canvas.rs::edit_process_canvas` and scenario dispatch in `app.rs` (around 1659): revalidate exact context equality, selected ID, current tool, clean/modal state, owner membership, and qualified-selection exclusion. Selected_behavior already resolves SequenceLink and ContextualLink ownership and parent chains. Prefer a small reusable behavior target predicate to avoid incompatible UI and App guards.
+5. `app/diagram_removal.rs`: reuse captured `begin_model_delete(None)` after validation, BUT extend Confirmation with derived owner scope (e.g. optional topology/scenario context or common document/owner/revision/epoch snapshot). At confirmation, require the same owner context after the modal's intentional epoch update. `model_menu::Opened` already captures document/revision/epoch/page/layer but `current_diagram()` on Behavior only consults state_context; it does not explicitly witness process/scenario active_owner. An explicit derived-owner stamp closes that gap without pretending an occurrence owner is a placement diagram. Also avoid carrying stale state-diagram `behavior.diagram.placement` into derived behavior confirmations: normalize it to None there.
+6. Existing pointer route is select item then global Actions menu (`model_menu.rs` Delete from model -> Message::Delete). Neither process nor scenario canvas currently offers a direct right-click remove handler. Preserve this pointer path; expose Delete / Shift+Delete shortcut hint for eligible derived behavior selection. Menu hint currently requires route/state request.canvas and is blank for derived behavior. Do not fake a route_edit::Context solely for hints.
+7. Core `session.rs` Command::Delete -> `references::delete_cascade_deferred`; RemoveStep uses the same cascade but index identity is less suitable than captured UUID. Ordinary App execute owns history and source synchronization. `references.rs::deletion_impact_inner` follows ownership/dependent references, not outbound reusable targets; `remove_objects` prunes ordered steps and clears lifeline/message bindings. Use this authority rather than hand-built GUI deletion commands.

+## Acceptance examples for root to execute
+
+Mount actual App.view and reuse `app/diagram_removal_tests.rs` harness. Helper dispatch alone cannot verify focus.
+
+1. OA process and SA chain: pointer-select occurrence, release, Delete before redraw; modal names captured occurrence. Cancel/Escape changes no source/history. Confirm removes occurrence and incident authored link while underlying work/exchange and sibling use remain. One Undo restores exact Document bundle/model/source; Redo repeats.
+2. Persisted link deletion leaves both endpoints, other routes and references. Selecting legacy ordered/implied connector cannot delete an endpoint. Fragment/control/sequence-reference deletion tests preserve referenced definitions.
+3. Scenario: actual participant header, message line, action/state row, scenario-use frame, nested fragment/branch selection. Parameterize representative target semantics. Confirm actor/exchange/action/state/scenario definition and second use survive. Lifeline deletion specifically checks occurrences retained with cleared endpoints/bindings, and rendered incomplete state is understandable. Fragment removes exactly its owned subtree. Parse generated source and compare with model; Undo restores exact bundle.
+4. Clean Inspector text reached by actual click, Tab and programmatic focus after canvas selection owns Delete (no modal/message); also source search/editor, scenario form, topology draft, toolbar and palette controls. F6 restores canvas ownership and shortcut. Window Unfocused/resize, page/owner change and open modal retire former ownership.
+5. Selection/owner/document/revision/camera epoch changes between emitted Remove and update reject it. Confirmation token replay after Cancel, new dialog, Undo, owner switch and selection change cannot remove any other object. Test same selected UUID with changed active_owner explicitly because derived views currently lack owner in model_menu current_diagram.
+6. Pending creation, message source, reorder drag, connect and reconnect suppress Delete. Test click-release before redraw so retired press cannot consume first shortcut. Unsupported Ctrl/Alt/Super combinations and repeats emit no remove. Selected hidden item/background is inert.
+7. Qualified process expanded nested child with two references: Delete does not delete outer reference or shared child; fresh selection of actual outer reference permits deletion of that use, preserving reusable sequence and second use. Opening definition permits deletion there with correct owner capture.

+This is a UI/spec extension of existing semantic commands. It does not require altering the user-owned specification or semantic storage model. Root should record the accepted modifier/occurrence/lifeline semantics in the established derived interaction contract and carry runtime evidence in the issue/PR.

+Source evidence: `model_menu.rs:416` emits `Message::Select(node.id)`. `app.rs:1006` retains the supplied placement identity as `selected`; `refresh_draft` at `app.rs:707` derives `selected_node` from that placement identity. The empty-background branch at `diagram.rs:931` starts a pan rather than changing selection, and its release clears the pan. `selection_context_request` at `diagram.rs:248` explicitly accepts `n.id == self.selected` and emits the node's semantic element as the removal intent's object. Admission at `diagram_removal.rs:46` then compares that semantic object directly with the selected placement ID and returns.

Checked pinned `iced_core-0.14.0/src/widget/operation/focusable.rs`, `iced_widget-0.14.2/src/{row,stack,text_input}.rs`, runtime/widget operations, and project reference-form traversal. Inspector traversal intentionally stays within its own form; this is existing behavior, not evidence of a new Tab regression. The mounted tests exercise real operations rather than private focus booleans.

Both failures were legacy standalone Canvas Program tests expecting an initial F2 to be refused before a mouse-only private focus flag was set. The candidate removed that flag and moved keyboard admission to the mounted `diagram::focus::Owner` widget.

+This is an expected evaluator adaptation to the new admission layer, not evidence by itself of a production focus bug. The protective unfocused/Inspector invariants are retained in new actual-App coverage; they were not simply discarded.

+
+Read-only review at root `dc1506f2e8fd2fb4e92efaba5b1d9425a6129e47`. No production edits, compiler/Cargo, native application, Gitea or WSL operations. Parent requested this bounded extension while its full suite runs and confirmed that StateAction and internal StateTransition rows are both in diagram-removal scope.
+
+## Decision
+
+Use the existing captured semantic confirmation for both typed StateAction rows and internal StateTransition rows. A row represents a maintained relation with its own ID, not a placement or its referenced work. Delete and Shift+Delete should confirm deleting that relation. No new placement semantics, schema, command or confirmation lifetime is needed.
+
+The existing canvas already selects exact relation IDs:
+
+- `behavior/state_canvas.rs:362` builds typed action rows from StateAction relations whose source is the displayed stable State/Mode. It sorts Entry, Do, Exit, then relation ID. Collapsed nodes have no rows.
+- `state_canvas.rs:328` builds internal-transition rows from internal StateTransition relations whose source is that stable state. Collapsed nodes have no rows.
+- `state_canvas.rs:543` checks action/internal row hit rectangles before the containing node body and returns the relation ID. Left click at lines 891–892 emits `Event::Select(context, relation_id)`; right click at lines 842–854 captures that same ID with `placement: None`.
+- `behavior.rs:1076` resolves both relation kinds back to the owning state machine through the relation source. `App::select`/`refresh_draft` retain the relation selection and derive no placement for it.
+- Rendering at `state_canvas.rs:1470` highlights the exact selected StateAction relation row. Text comes from its phase and referenced work, not a fabricated child occurrence.
+
+Both gates presently reject these rows: `state_canvas.rs:803` only admits placements or `view.edges`, and `app/diagram_removal.rs:77` only admits projected edges/ports when no placement is present. Core `projection.rs:397–401` intentionally includes only non-Internal StateTransition edges in a dedicated state view; StateActions and Internal transitions therefore are not missing routed edges to add to the core projection.
+
+## Minimal shared visibility contract
+
+Add a small `pub(crate) fn visible_row_relation(project: &Project, diagram: Id, view: &ProjectedView, id: Id) -> bool` beside the existing row helpers in `behavior/state_canvas.rs`. All three callers below should use this function. It must not admit a relation merely because `project.contains(id)`.
+
+1. Resolve `project.diagrams[diagram].projection.state_machine()` safely; return false unless this is a dedicated state-machine diagram.
+2. Resolve the exact relation ID and require the source to belong to this machine using `projection::state_machine_contains`. For an Internal StateTransition, require its target to belong too. Only accept StateAction or StateTransition with `transition_kind == Internal`.
+3. Iterate the supplied current projected nodes, finding a node for that relation's source. Reuse `state_action_rows(project, node)` or `internal_rows(project, node)` and require an exact matching relation ID among those rows. This reuses the renderer's stable-state and `!collapsed` checks rather than duplicating its layout eligibility.
+
+This covers collapsed parents: core `projection.rs:298–321` omits placements hidden behind a collapsed visual ancestor, so no matching source node exists. A collapsed source node remains projected but the row helper returns empty. Explicit membership prevents another state machine's relation from becoming eligible through a stale selection or inappropriate supplied view. The helper's `diagram` and `view` must both come from the current captured context; callers already have them.
+
+Three production call sites:
+
+- In the existing Delete branch of `state_canvas.rs`, extend the no-placement admission predicate with `visible_row_relation(self.project, self.diagram, &scene.view, object)`. Keep its current editable, Select-tool, press/pan/source and exact modifier guards. Emit the existing `Intent` with `object = relation_id`, `placement = None`; the `model` flag may remain `modifiers.shift()` because no-placement intents already take the confirmation branch for either key.
+- In `app/diagram_removal.rs`, extend the no-placement visibility predicate only when `self.page == Page::Behavior`, using the same helper and `intent.context.diagram`. Keep all current context, selection, editor, modal, connection, bend and placement validation. Existing `begin_model_delete_target(intent.object, Some(context))` captures the correct relation ID.
+- In `behavior/state_menu.rs:187`, use the same helper alongside `view.edges` when deciding the Delete / Shift+Delete hint. No Hide command or placement shortcut should appear for rows.
+
+No new modifier or gesture route is necessary. The actual Iced focus owner admits keyboard events; the existing state Delete branch rejects active move/create/connect/reconnect/pan gestures. App again validates current scope and clean editors. Confirmation snapshots/token lifetime remain unchanged. Do not replace the typed relation ID with `relation.target()`; that would delete reusable Activity/Function work.
+
+`oa-core/src/session.rs:638` routes Command::Delete through the established cascade. `references.rs:275` starts impact from the requested ID and expands ownership/dependents, not a relation's source/target endpoints. Deleting a StateAction link therefore preserves both its State/Mode and referenced Activity/Function; another state's action relation targeting that same work survives. Any legitimate dependents of the deleted relation still use the existing command and Undo rules.
+
+## One realistic Mounted test function
+
+Add to `crates/oa-desktop/src/app/diagram_removal_tests.rs`, reusing its Mounted, delete/key helpers and source consistency checker. Start from `mounted_state_delete_uses_state_placement_and_preserves_architecture_placement`, not the standalone private-State canvas tests. Existing geometry/identity evidence is in `state_canvas.rs:2122` (`typed_state_actions_are_named_selectable_rows_before_internal_transitions_and_regions`).
+
+Suggested single test function loops four fresh cases: Entry, Do, Exit StateAction and Internal StateTransition. A compact SA fixture is sufficient for this identity-specific regression; OA uses the identical shared State/Mode row machinery.
+
+- Create a machine, region, two states, and one reusable Function. Create three StateAction relations (Entry/Do/Exit) from the first state to work, with distinct names; create another action relation from the second state to the same work. Include one internal transition on the first state. Empty legacy entry/do/exit text keeps geometry explicit. Persist the state view via `state_edit::create_view`, then mount App on Behavior with its active owner and saved state diagram.
+- Set zoom/pan deterministically and settle. Get the actual canvas bounds from the `diagram-keyboard-owner` focusable geometry and source state's current projected position. Typed rows start at `state.position.y + 64` with 28-pixel spacing and 26-pixel hit height for this fixture. The internal row starts after the three action rows, at `state.position.y + 64 + 3*28`, with height 52. Translate the chosen row center by App state zoom/pan and actual canvas origin. This uses real pointer selection and no private canvas state seeding.
+- Click that center and assert selected == exact relation ID, state placement == None, and selected Function/State ID has not replaced the relation selection.
+- Snapshot the source bundle. Focused Delete must emit `StateDiagram(Remove(..))` and open confirmation targeting this exact relation with no placement. It must leave the model and source untouched before confirmation. Cancel, click the row again to reacquire focus, and Shift+Delete should target that same relation. Confirm using the actual captured token.
+- Assert only the targeted relation is removed in this fixture; the Function, both States, their placements, other phases, and the second state's relation referencing the same Function survive. Check source/model consistency. Undo must restore the exact source bundle and every relation in one unit.
+
+For the new helper's own correctness, small local assertions using the actual projected views should cover source collapsed, ancestor collapsed, wrong machine/diagram and unrelated relation ID; avoid broad new duplicated App guard tests. Existing context/token/editor/modifier/gesture guards are unchanged.
+
+The currently generic confirmation names the relation (`project.named(captured_id)`), which is the correct deletion identity. If row text and relation names are routinely ambiguous, a narrow display improvement can additionally describe phase + referenced work + source state using the captured relation. This is optional clarity work, not a reason to redesign confirmation or change its target.
+
+This extension closes two concrete persisted-state diagram selection gaps. Explorer shortcuts are a separate surface and are not asserted here to be required for issue 15.

+All ran through `.local/run-allocation-gate.py` with `.local/toolchain/env.ps1`, Rust/Cargo 1.98.1 Windows GNU LLVM, LLVM-MinGW 20260908, serialized compilation. Full command omits the filter. Exact start/end, exit codes, commands, source SHA and file hashes are in the [archive manifest](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/archive-manifest.json) and linked receipt files.

+The full dc1506f failures were the two legacy raw-Canvas F2 tests assuming private canvas focus. Architecture/state keyboard ownership had moved to the mounted Focusable wrapper. Their rename/identity/placement/camera/history checks remain. New actual App-tree F2 coverage verifies initially unfocused refusal, pointer focus, inline rename, clean Inspector focus, Tab followed by F2 in one event batch and subsequent refusal. This replacement evaluator passes in the 28e21a0 targeted run; a later combined full run is still required.

+The independent [candidate review](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/diagram-delete-acceptance-review-20260912.md) found placement-ID selection after Placement properties was rejected against semantic identity. dc1506f normalized admission and retained raw selection separately while explicitly capturing the semantic deletion target. OA/SA mounted coverage verifies the generated menu action, blank-canvas focus, exact placement hiding, semantic confirmation and whole-source Undo. Those cases passed in both applicable runs.

+The 28e21a0 run also verifies actual Entry/Do/Exit StateAction and Internal StateTransition row clicks, captured relation confirmation, Cancel, source/model consistency, preservation of reused Function/other state relations, collapsed source/ancestor refusal, and one-step exact Undo.
