Owner ruling 2026-10-04: the module is a sunk cost, retrievable from
history if ever revisited. Removed: core practice contracts + pipeline
helpers, the PracticeStore port + adapter + data dir path, server
service + API routes (sets, clusters picker, practice aborts), the
practice pages + dialog/exam/list UI, chain-table's Generate handoff,
sidebar nav, activity-dock practice rows, and the partitioner/
problemGenerator/grader model roles (BACKGROUND_MODEL_ROLES 8 → 5).
Survivors, moved to core/chains.ts (pure + browser-safe): ReasoningChain,
chainsForSelection, formatChainLine — the chain table and graph
emission still consume them.
Rulings: each problem generation is its own visible dock job (the
extraction per-chunk pattern), and practice shares extraction's
semaphore — one process-wide 3-permit pool for ALL background LLM
jobs; total background LLM concurrency bounded at 3.
A. SHARED POOL: new src/agent/subagents/bg-llm-semaphore.ts —
globalThis __lhLlmSlots, PERMIT_COUNT 3 (the ruling), the
fresh-take/handed-off-permit deadlock discipline preserved for
BOTH callers. extraction.ts's withExtractSlot is now a thin
wrapper (job-row signal → withBgLlmSlot); __lhExtractSlots and
__lhPracticeSlots both die. The partitioner now acquires a permit
too (it's a background LLM job — it didn't before).
B. REGISTRY ROWS: the aggregate setId:generation / setId:grading rows
are replaced by setId:partition (phase partitioning, label
'Partitioning — title'), setId:gen:problemId (queued→generating,
'Problem i/N — title'), setId:grade:problemId (queued→grading,
'Grading i/N — title'). Each row carries its OWN abort controller
and its OWN usage (one PracticeStepLog per row — the aggregate
partitioner/generator/grader folding dies). Row key = feed id =
abort key (the dock dup-key law).
C. ABORT SEMANTICS: abortPracticeRow(key) routes by shape — gen row:
THAT problem only (error 'Aborted', siblings continue, set settles
ready with one errored problem); partition row: the whole run;
grade row: that grade drops (answer kept, re-submittable).
abortPractice(setId) composes from row aborts + the synchronous
persisted marks (a set-abort's verdict stands before the settles
re-read it — the settle step keeps an existing error status).
/api/activity/abort kind practice now takes the ROW key (charset
admits ':').
D. FEED + DOCK: ActivityPractice/FeedPractice carry per-row identity
(id = row key, problemIndex/problemTotal); dock blobs render per
row, labels carry the i/N; the aggregate row is gone.
E. Boot sweep unchanged at set grain; the live-row check is now a
key-prefix scan (any live row of the set protects it). The
updatedAt heartbeat covers the new row scheme as-is.
Tests (20 in the pipeline suite): per-problem row shape/uniqueness/
i-N labels (partition row frozen behind a gated partitioner; per-row
usage ISOLATION pin — b's log never shows on c's row); abort-one-gen
(sibling completes, set ready with one errored problem); partition-
row abort; queued grade-row abort (dead-ticket path: answer kept,
re-submittable, sibling lands); shared-pool identity + contention
(practice queues behind extraction-style holders); registry/dock
feed mapping. Test isolation hardened: unique per-store set ids,
afterEach registry/lock/pool reset (a timed-out test can no longer
poison the rest).
architecture.md: jobs-pattern paragraph rewritten (per-problem rows,
shared pool, abort routing).
1149/1149, tsc 0, lint 0, build 0.
The live import surfaced it: a multi-chunk notes source renders N feed
rows, and the dock keyed every one by run.chatId (the SOURCE id) —
React's duplicate-key error. The activity feed also dropped run.part
entirely, so all chunk rows showed identical titles.
- ActivityExtraction/FeedExtraction gain a unique row id (source id, or
'src#i' for chunk jobs) and part; the feed title carries the '· i/N'
suffix like the graph status route
- toBlobs keys extraction blobs by the row id; chatId stays the SOURCE
id (identity for links)
- abort sends the SOURCE id for extractions — aborting any chunk row
kills the source's whole fan-out (the new source-wide abort), and the
abort route's id charset rejects '#' anyway
- new pin: one source, two chunk rows → two blobs, distinct ids, same
chatId; dock fixtures updated
Owner ruling (2026-09-23, amendment to 04e336d): no hardcoded fallback
exists anywhere. contextWindow(record, limits) resolves the denominator
ONLY from the live index (provider:id -> contextWindow straight from
pi's catalog); a model missing from it (historical session, package
update, failed fetch) reads limit null and the meter renders
usage-only — the honest-render precedent, never a fake window.
- src/core/prices.ts: the 1354-entry CONTEXT_LIMITS table (65KB) and its
generation apparatus deleted; the fold returns limit: number | null.
PRICES untouched (regen verified byte-identical via the reworked
sync-pricing script).
- scripts/sync-pricing.ts: generates PRICES only; contextWindow leaves
the priced map, the guard, and the template.
- The dock meter's owner-selected treatment: the activity feed carries
the limit server-side. catalogContextLimits() (server/model-catalog.ts)
builds the index over the same keyed providers the picker federates;
activityFeed() joins it onto every running job (ActivityJob.contextLimit,
null when the model is missing — the dock reads it off the feed, no
client-side table, no regression while the UI's catalog-join chunk lands).
- components/activity-dock.tsx: toBlobs reads job.contextLimit (import
of CONTEXT_LIMITS gone); stats-bar renders usage-only on null limit
(mechanical interim — UI stream's join chunk follows).
- tests: usage.test.ts pins the no-fallback contract (index hit / absent
/ empty / missing-model -> null); activity-feed.test.ts pins the
server join (catalog model -> 1048576, unknown -> null, no-usage ->
null); render pins updated to the interim usage-only render.
DELETE /api/chats/[id]?mode=preserve-graph|delete-nodes (mode required):
- preserve-graph: only extraction bookkeeping dies (coverage rows,
legacy checkpoints) — graph ledgers byte-untouched
- delete-nodes: the chat's ledger traces die. Node survival = surviving
provenance point / mapping line (notes imports carry empty
provenance) / surviving event. The creator's aliases + provenance are
stripped from a surviving node's create line (owner ruling
2026-09-23: name/statement/createdAt are the shared identity);
orphan nodes, their edges, events, mappings, positions, embedding
vectors and cluster members die; cluster labels stay (immutable)
Gates: 404 unknown, 409 turn_in_flight / jobs_running (with jobIds),
503 extraction_winding_down after a 10s abort-and-poll; the purge is
one sync block (ledgers → jobs → chat record last). rewriteLedgers is
atomic (tmp + rename). graphRevision (max mtime over graph data files)
rides the activity feed + the response as the change stamp.
Anti-resurrection: the chat pipeline re-checks chat liveness at each
merge — a run that slips past the wind-down aborts with nothing merged
or checkpointed; its partial spend dies with the chat.
Extraction is real spend and background work; the dock needs to see
and stop it. User decisions: persist all cost data (chat record),
per-stage usage granularity, and TRUE cancellation for abort.
USAGE CAPTURE (live + persisted):
- extraction.ts: per-call onStepFinish captures each billed step's
usage (SDK LanguageModelUsage -> CallUsage: input/output/cache
read+write/reasoning) into the registry's live per-stage usage
(extractor/auditor; the merger is deterministic — no model call).
- /api/graph/status runs now carry usage (model + steps per stage);
cost/context folds are the consumer's (core/prices.ts — nothing
stores dollars).
- ChatRecord.extractions: append-only per-run usage log (mirrors the
turns log): startedAt key, at, durationMs, merge stats when the
merger ran, stages. Persisted on success AND failure — a failed run
still spent money. Idempotent per startedAt; the list payload
(ChatSummary) never leaks it.
- EmissionStats moved to contracts/graph.ts (its contract home);
core/graph.ts re-exports for existing importers.
- Verified end-to-end against the real pipeline (backfill one chat):
per-step token counts, reasoning tokens, and the auditor's growing
prompt-cache reads captured and persisted.
TRUE ABORT (the dock's abort button, user decision):
- RunningExtraction owns one AbortController per run, shared across
phases; abortExtraction(chatId) fires it and returns whether a run
was aborted (idempotent no-op otherwise). The pending model call
receives the signal — the provider cancels the request, spend
stops. throwIfAborted() at phase boundaries ends runs aborted in
sync gaps.
- Abort is a deliberate stop, not a failure: same ledger discipline
(nothing merged, nothing checkpointed, partial usage persisted) but
the run reports zero emissions instead of throwing. Exported via
src/server/observability.ts for master's /api/activity/abort route.
- Tests: mid-run abort (hanging mock that rejects on the signal),
live-accumulation + persisted-record assertions, store-seam
idempotency, and the summary-payload leak guard.
The dock is visible in every view, so it needs every running process —
sub-agent jobs across ALL chats (not just the open one) plus the global
extraction runs — in one poll. /api/jobs stays chat-scoped and untouched:
it is the transcript machinery's poll and carries turnInFlight for the
re-attach seam (chat-transport), the seam we spent three live rounds
stabilizing; making it polymorphic would fork its response shape by mode
and put regression risk on exactly the wrong path. The dock is a different
consumer with a different shape (cross-chat, running-only, cost-bearing),
served by a thin route over server/observability.ts:
- activityFeed(): running jobs from every chat (title-joined, oldest-first
on last activity) + extraction runs + busyChats (chats with a teacher
turn in flight — the biggest spender; data made available, rendering is
a dock decision).
- GET /api/activity — the dock's single poll everywhere.
- Cost math stays client-side (core/prices.ts folds); raw usage rides the
records and the transport stays thin.
Decided with the user over the polymorphic-/api/jobs and
separate-all-jobs-endpoint alternatives.
The 2026-09 observability wave's type-level foundation, landed before the
streams so nothing renders against guessed shapes:
- contracts/chat.ts: CallUsage + TurnUsage (per-model-call token accounting,
one entry per teacher/wake turn keyed by messageId) and ChatRecord.turns —
a DELIBERATELY parallel append-only usage log, not per-message metadata:
the client re-POSTs its message list every turn and its copies never
carry server-stamped fields, so anything inside messages gets clobbered
by the next persist (the wave-3 merge-rule lesson).
- contracts/chat.ts: PlanBlockData — the persisted data-plan-block part
(full DAG on plan_init, one-level neighborhood on plan updates, snapshot
semantics so history renders what was true then).
- contracts/jobs.ts: JobUsage + JobRecord.usage — a sub-agent run's
accumulated accounting, written by the runner.
- core/ports.ts + store/chats.ts: ChatStore.appendTurnUsage — idempotent
per messageId (abort replays / wake retries append once); listChats no
longer leaks turns into the list payload.
- core/prices.ts: PRICES + CONTEXT_LIMITS (generated from OpenRouter's
published pricing via scripts/sync-pricing.ts) + pure folds: callCost,
turnCost, sessionCost, contextWindow, jobCost. Unknown model or absent
fields render as absent, never zero.
- server/observability.ts: barrel-approved surface for the transport layer
(fixes the import-law violation in the graph status route that slipped
through the wave-3 merge verification).
Capture wiring (agent onStepFinish -> persist seam, plan-block emission)
lands next as master seam work; the streams start against these shapes.
