# Palette readability candidate
Source **afa74a305980f611437dd3aa2f937d36e9266cfe** combines the reviewed palette,
canvas boundaries, process topology outlines and read-only input correction with
the lifecycle/typed-activation integration. The Windows `style::tests` gate passes
all **10 tests**, with no failures or ignored cases and 862 filtered out. It
compiled in 7m20s and ran in 3.85s, closing 2026-09-13 at 00:37:15 UTC with exit 0.
All **538 committed inputs** remained unchanged; input-manifest SHA-256 is
`d7dc0bd3b642e50c2796035696fc6da5bb0cbf07e680e15528c49229544c5583`.
[Exact command and result](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/palette-afa74a3.result.json)
and [raw output](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/palette-afa74a3.log)
retain the test identities. This targeted result does not establish full-suite,
native interaction or physical-monitor acceptance.
The [decision and acceptance boundary](experiments/palette-readability-20260913/palette-integration-decision-20260913.md)
records why the first candidate strengthens essential luminance contrast while
retaining category cues and lighter decorative dividers. The Source editor uses
a separate static dark syntax/selection palette. The read-only input adapter
retains selection and copy while the missing input callback still prevents edits.

The archive preserves historical source-only findings verbatim. In particular,
the original foundation's false claim that disabled inputs cannot select is
superseded by its correction and independent review. Numeric contrast tests are
engineering benchmarks, not proof that all physical monitors display the result
well. Native syntax scanability, thin strokes at Fit, keyboard focus and actual
selection remain separate acceptance observations. Custom chooser/menu keyboard
target cues and faint control boundaries identified in the residual review are
corrected at **a357b22778e82e8dc75d853ecd70f04ed32a1ca7**. The
[three-file contribution](experiments/palette-readability-20260913/palette-overlay-handoff-20260913.md)
adds an inset menu-target outline, a chooser-target rule, stronger overflow thumb,
and stronger enabled chooser-trigger/popup boundaries. The
[independent review](experiments/palette-readability-20260913/palette-overlay-independent-review-20260913.md)
found no actionable source defect. Existing geometry, clipping, disabled actions and Enter identities are
retained. The later dd39 native trial confirms the chooser rule clears its visible
secondary row text and the menu outline clears the Properties/Open source text.
The shadowed context-menu outer border remains decorative LINE; this is not a
claim that every popup boundary was changed. Routing-warning selection
remains a separate unfinished interaction change. Issue #26 remains open.
## Rendered overlay evaluator correction
The first a357 runs compiled successfully but failed their newly added initial
paint assertions: context menu **11 passed, one failed**, chooser **13 passed,
one failed**. Both exited 101 with the same 538 unchanged inputs, manifest SHA-256
`8d29726695a4a325e4f0bbd299316e338212afeee53c39c9c7ff3ebccbf81f6b`.
[Menu failure](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/context-menu-a357b22.log)
and [chooser failure](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/chooser-a357b22.log)
remain preserved; they are not passing acceptance results.
Source diagnosis found both fixtures drew immediately after `UserInterface::build`.
Installed Iced runtime 0.14.0 initializes its retained overlay to `None`, and
`draw` returns before painting an overlay without its layout. The normal
`update` pass builds and retains that layout even with an empty event slice.
The chooser must repeat this after each controlled rebuild: its Cache retains
widget state, not overlay layout.
Test-only correction **e44f07565cc7599d5c5a15a6b5599b4f5d105718** adds this normal
empty-event update before observing the frames and asserts it emits no actions.
It changes no production paint, contrast thresholds, sampled rows, navigation or
Enter identities. [Independent source review](experiments/palette-readability-20260913/palette-overlay-test-lifecycle-review-20260913.md)
confirms the lifecycle diagnosis. The corrected actual-renderer gates pass:
**12 context-menu tests** and **14 chooser tests**, each with no failures or
ignored cases. Both used 538 unchanged inputs, manifest SHA-256
`6ccc302360615e3f4162604e9432cbf507827f86bbc4a12b6bfa0ecf14e55ec7`.
[Menu result](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/context-menu-e44f075.result.json)
and [chooser result](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/chooser-e44f075.result.json)
closed at 00:59:30 and 01:00:06 UTC respectively.
The complete Windows desktop suite at **e44f075** then passed **874 tests**,
with no failures, ignored or filtered cases, in 1495.23 seconds. It closed at
2026-09-13 01:25:40 UTC on the same unchanged input manifest.
[Full result](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/full-e44f075.result.json)
and [raw output](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/full-e44f075.log)
preserve that exact source scope. Strict all-target Clippy subsequently failed
on two `chunks_exact_to_as_chunks` lints in the read-only rendering test;
[the failed gate](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/clippy-e44f075.result.json)
remains part of the evidence. The chain did not build a GUI.
Test-only **f55519317214c972ac3ba04e0ec82501eea4e1f6** replaces both constant
pixel chunk iterators with `as_chunks::<4>().0.iter()`. Production inputs and
assertions are unchanged. The first retry failed before spawning Cargo because
the process lacked the toolchain PATH; the initialized retry uses the distinct
`palette-f555193-r2` receipt name. That compilation then rejected the iterator
filter's `&&[u8; 4]` argument at both slice comparison calls. Follow-up
**dd39e1fdc13f04f18975a70736d2ed7f752a6df2** explicitly dereferences those arguments;
it preserves the comparisons and thresholds. The corrected source passes all
**10 style tests** (864 filtered), including actual rendered read-only selection
and copy, and **strict all-target Clippy**. They closed at 01:43:35 and 01:51:18 UTC
on 538 unchanged inputs, manifest SHA-256
`68b92e6e55c77b680194c2784df3f83f08eb9e1bc9cdc112751bab7fe0b2eee6`.
[Style receipt](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/palette-dd39e1f.result.json)
and [Clippy receipt](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/clippy-dd39e1f.result.json)
retain the exact commands and intervals.
[Independent correction and staging review](experiments/palette-readability-20260913/palette-testfix-staging-review-20260913.md)
establishes that the e44-to-dd39 delta is only those two test iterators and
dereferences. The full-suite evidence remains at e44 and the affected test is
rechecked at dd39; no full-dd39 result is claimed. The matching GUI build passed
at 01:59:38 UTC on the same unchanged inputs.
[GUI receipt](experiments/diagram-removal-windows-20260912/gui-dd39e1f.result.json).
The [bounded native trial](release-canvas-native-dd39e1f-20260913.md) subsequently
closed normally with 41 frames and five exact saved-model comparisons. It covers
actual menu/chooser cues, source/Inspector selection and canvas boundaries;
physical-monitor appearance and the documented overview/navigation limitations
remain outside a universal acceptance claim.
