The 2026-10-08 flip, verified end-to-end (notarized build accepted,
stapled, spctl clean): Developer ID auto-detect, LH_NOTARY keychain
profile, zip + blockmap beside the DMG for Squirrel.Mac, publish block
pointing at GitHub Releases (repo goes public before 0.3.0; builds never
auto-upload — publishing is a release-time act).
problemTool takes the whole-graph node source (chat-handler passes
graphStore.readNodes, read fresh per pose): prepareArguments silently
normalizes name targets to canonical ids so the RECORD carries ids
(the mastery trace groups on them); execute rejects unresolvable
targets with a one-line invalidInputResult — no re-listing, the [id]
proposition list already sits in the agent's context. Validation set
is the whole graph, not the picks: pickless sessions and future
graph-tools poses stay valid. Absent node source (tests) = no
validation.
The mastery-trace contract: problem targets must be traceable to
propositions. resolveTargetId (pure, chains.ts) resolves a target
string to a canonical node id — id exact first, then name
case-insensitive — against the WHOLE graph (pickless sessions and
future graph-tools poses stay valid). The graph-context marker now
introduces each pick as [id] name: statement (ids were never shown to
the model before — names only); chains stay names: comprehension
context, not tags.
Each staircase step is now TWO columns (36px): chains pl-12 — the
checkbox aligned with the cluster's FOLDER icon — and statements pl-21
— the checkbox where a chain icon WOULD sit (the chains lost theirs;
the pattern continues anyway). Live-measured: chain checkbox = folder
icon (336=336); statement checkbox = chain checkbox + 36 (372).
- chain rows lose the WaypointsIcon (owner: not needed — the chips +
connectors already read as chains); folders keep their icons.
- THE ALIGNMENT STAIRCASE: every level's checkbox sits directly under
its parent's expander arrow. The expander now shares the checkbox's
14px width (h-5 w-3.5), making each nesting step exactly 18px —
clusters pl-3 (12px) → chains pl-7.5 (30px, the cluster expander) →
statements pl-12 (48px, the chain expander). Live-measured: 318=318,
336=336.
- dialog: optional 'Anything else?' textarea (typing-only, 2000-char mirror)
- API: body gains note? — trimmed, whitespace-only omitted, hard 400 over 2000
- pipeline: note persisted on the set and threaded to both agent stages
- agents: THE LEARNER'S NOTE prompt block (present only when set) + the
weighed-never-owed stance pinned in both doctrines
- fix en route: doubled THE PARAMETERS heading in both prompts since slice 3
(renderParams owns the heading; the literal blocks removed)
The Accept/Decline verdict gate is gone (owner ruling 2026-09-26):
presenting the plan ends the teacher's turn; the learner's next message
is a natural reply. Teaching begins at the first quiz call tagged with a
nodeId (probe quizzes carry none) — both folds (view phaseAt3, native
phaseAt3Lh) advance on the call itself, and the teach divider renders
before that whole assistant block. No backwards compat: verdict markers,
the verdict input event, optimistic appends, composer buttons, and
projection all deleted; prompts and docs rewritten to the natural flow.
The onSubmitAnswer path was the one Wave B send site missing its stash:
addToolOutput triggers the SDK's automatic continuation send, the
transport found nothing stashed, and threw — the answer never POSTed, so
the question stayed open. One line (plus the contract comment). Caught
live by the owner; the suite drives answer events directly at the
handler, so this client seam stays untested until Wave D's client work.
The owner needs exact new-user simulation as a one-command launch
(repeatable first-run BYOK testing). Option A, owner-approved:
env-hiding switch + launcher script.
Fix 1 — LH_IGNORE_ENV_KEYS=1 in the keys seam: when set, every env key
is invisible app-wide; only auth.json counts. The mechanism is boot-time
DELETION, not seam-local filtering: pi-ai resolves provider keys from
process.env NATIVELY at every request (verified — auth/context.js's
defaultProviderAuthContext reads live env, no boot snapshot), so
deleting the managed vars from process.env in initAuthEnv is the ONE
mechanism that hides keys from every consumer — model engines included,
plus the three direct process.env readers (visual-maker, pdf-reader,
openRouterApiKey). realEnv stays EMPTY under the switch (nothing counts
as env), and the fill-gap still reflects auth.json keys so a fresh user
can add keys mid-session and engines see them with no restart.
keyValue reads file-only under the switch as belt-and-suspenders (a
post-boot env reintroduction stays invisible to the seam). Unset
switch = today's behavior, byte-for-byte (server-keys.test.ts pins it).
Fix 2 — scripts/dev-fresh.sh (npm run dev:fresh): fresh throwaway
LH_DATA_DIR (.fresh-data/, wiped each launch, --keep preserves), and —
the subtle bit — LH_AUTH_FILE redirected INTO the fresh dir: dev's
AUTH_FILE default is the repo-root auth.json, which may symlink the
real keys; the fresh instance must never see it. Sets the switch,
dedicated port (default 3005, --port overrideable, standing assignments
3000-3004 refused), prints URL + data dir, safe to rerun. .fresh-data/
gitignored.
Test: tests/fresh-env-keys.test.ts (own process — the switch is
boot-time): the engine-path deletion asserted directly, the env/file
collision resolved to the file, status rows report file sources only,
mid-session saveKey/deleteKey round-trip, idempotent re-init, and the
unset-switch env-wins read seam live-checked.
Live-verified on 3005 via the launcher: zero federated models, all
providers keyPresent false, no present keys, no auth.json/settings.json
in the fresh dir; then mid-session ZAI save → 7 zai models federate
instantly, source 'file' — while .env.local's real keys stayed
invisible throughout.
Gates: typecheck, lint, 863/863, build.
The owner chose: adopt the same layout engine regular mermaid uses, keep
our SVG skin. That engine is dagre (Sugiyama-style layered layout) — and
mermaid 11 ships dagre-d3-es 7.0.14, so we import exactly that fork, via
the same deep subpath mermaid itself uses. No new code shipped; pinned
verbatim in package.json (lane touch — flagged to master).
blockLayout keeps its signature ({ x, y, nodeH, width, height }, all
consumers unchanged): it feeds dagre our geometry (NODE_W boxes, GAP_X/
GAP_Y separations, zero margin, per-node grown heights from round 7),
runs the layout (deterministic, synchronous, DOM-free — SSR and render
tests stay exact), and converts dagre's node centers back to top-lefts.
Dangling edges are ignored defensively (a ghost endpoint would spawn an
unmeasured node and break the measurer).
topoFor stays exported for order/depth semantics (tests); placement no
longer calls it. dagre's network-simplex ranker + crossing minimization
now handle multi-parent DAGs, so future plan shapes route like mermaid
diagrams do. On the existing tree fixtures dagre's numbers agree exactly
with the old hand-rolled layout — every render pin survives verbatim.
The accept-plan UI lands (docs/probe-teach-split.md §4, formerly the
interim rule): presenting the plan no longer moves the phase — the
learner's ACCEPT does. While the presented plan awaits its verdict, the
composer's send square becomes two stacked buttons (green Accept plan /
red Decline); typed text rides the verdict as his note, Enter keeps
sending plain side questions (phase unmoved), decline asks for a
revision and the buttons stay.
The seam: accept sends a user message carrying a data-plan-accepted
part (PlanAcceptedData in contracts/chat.ts, TeacherUIDataParts
'plan-accepted'); phaseAt3 reads it as the plan→teach event (plan_init
demoted to presentation-only); convertToModelMessages drops data parts,
so the teacher sees only the text. Mid-lesson rewrites need no fresh
verdict — acceptance happens once, at the first presentation.
The teacher's planning prompt now ends the turn at presentation and
waits for the verdict (never teaches into an unaccepted plan).
Gates: tsc clean, 304/304 (phases tests rewritten to the acceptance
seam incl. decline/side-question/failed-init cases; composer verdict
render tests), lint, build. Live GLM smoke ALL PASS: phase pinned at
'plan' after plan_init, presentation turn carried NO check, accept
click flipped the summary to 'teach', then tagged checks moved the map
(current=rates, visited=composite); zero console errors.
The successor of the injected plan blocks (docs/probe-teach-split.md §6):
always on once a tree exists, a zoomed-in window (2:1, ~2¼ node widths)
centered on the CURRENT node, re-centering by pure derivation as tagged
checks move the lesson — statuses derive live from the transcript on
every render (derivePlanStatuses), glow on current, fallback focus on
the lesson's first node, click opens the existing full-DAG popup.
Bottom-left, mirroring the activity dock's bottom-right; hidden on
narrow viewports; the learner's visual polish pass comes later.
PlanDiagram gains a viewBoxOverride (exported); latestTree exported.
Tests: viewBox centering/clamping (pure) + render (hidden pre-plan,
windowed viewBox, glowing current, starting fallback).
Diagnosis (2026-09-11 user testing, minimal-effort GLM): sessions stuck on
'plan' forever. Two causes: (1) the three-phase view read the stored tree's
currentNodeId, which nothing ever writes post author-once (2026-09-03) — a
structural dead seam; (2) the teacher stochastically left quiz.nodeId
untagged, and done-by-quiz-result semantics would have falsely completed
nodes anyway.
The redesign (docs/probe-teach-split.md) abolishes derived occupancy in
favor of explicit events:
- Two agents over one transcript: createProberAgent (quiz without a
nodeId field, ask, probe_done) and createTeacherAgent (full toolset,
plan_init onward). The chat-handler construction branch keys on a
probe_done part in the transcript. MODELS.prober added.
- probe_done: server-side seam tool — carries the learner assessment
(strands + free-form edge read), refuses while a question is open or
the probe is already concluded, and queues a handoff steer through the
generalized wake pipeline (steers now dedupe by id, not jobId; job
finalization only for job steers). The teacher auto-wakes and authors
the plan; the learner sees the assessment via the probe-done card.
- phases: probe ends at a concluded probe_done, plan ends at a
successful plan_init — strictly sequential, no skipping, no legacy
compatibility (data wiped at the pivot per doctrine).
- Plan map = position, not completion: derivePlanStatuses reads only
tagged quiz CALLS (state/outcome feed nothing); current = latest
tagged node with consecutive duplicates collapsed, visited = earlier
distinct stays (a revisit stays in both — current wins at render).
PlanTree is structure-only; currentNodeId/doneNodeIds and the dead
mutation helpers are gone. No fallback current.
- Prompts split per agent (prompts/prober/, prompts/teacher/ over the
trimmed shared base); graph-context injection removed entirely
(shelved, docs/probe-teach-split.md §5); knowledge-graph context no
longer reaches either agent.
- Plan blocks are full-only snapshots at plan_init (neighborhood
machinery retired; the persistent DAG window is the future UI wave);
usage capture unchanged.
Gates: tsc clean, 294/294 tests (phases/plan-tree/plan-blocks/question-
tools rewritten to the new semantics; probe-done + handoff-wake tests
added), lint, build. Live GLM smoke PASS: prober concluded with an honest
assessment, teacher auto-woke, authored a 10-node plan with the block
attached, then tagged checks on slope-instinct → secant derived current/
visited exactly as designed; grading honest both ways (driver off-by-one
proved a wrong answer grades false).
Two-part root cause (found by the lh-ui stream + master together): (1)
src/store/jobs.ts updateJob unconditionally overwrote updatedAt with now(),
silently clobbering any explicit patch timestamp — JobPatch types it as
patchable but the adapter ignored it, so order-sensitive tests rode on
same-millisecond tie-breaking (failed ~4/5 in isolation). The store now
honors patch.updatedAt ?? now() — semantics-preserving for every existing
caller, which never passed updatedAt explicitly. (2) the activity-feed
test's finally wiped the ENTIRE shared data/jobs dir — with node:test
running test files as concurrent processes, that deletes other processes'
live fixtures; cleanup is now scoped to the test's own created ids.
The 2026-09 observability wave's type-level foundation, landed before the
streams so nothing renders against guessed shapes:
- contracts/chat.ts: CallUsage + TurnUsage (per-model-call token accounting,
one entry per teacher/wake turn keyed by messageId) and ChatRecord.turns —
a DELIBERATELY parallel append-only usage log, not per-message metadata:
the client re-POSTs its message list every turn and its copies never
carry server-stamped fields, so anything inside messages gets clobbered
by the next persist (the wave-3 merge-rule lesson).
- contracts/chat.ts: PlanBlockData — the persisted data-plan-block part
(full DAG on plan_init, one-level neighborhood on plan updates, snapshot
semantics so history renders what was true then).
- contracts/jobs.ts: JobUsage + JobRecord.usage — a sub-agent run's
accumulated accounting, written by the runner.
- core/ports.ts + store/chats.ts: ChatStore.appendTurnUsage — idempotent
per messageId (abort replays / wake retries append once); listChats no
longer leaks turns into the list payload.
- core/prices.ts: PRICES + CONTEXT_LIMITS (generated from OpenRouter's
published pricing via scripts/sync-pricing.ts) + pure folds: callCost,
turnCost, sessionCost, contextWindow, jobCost. Unknown model or absent
fields render as absent, never zero.
- server/observability.ts: barrel-approved surface for the transport layer
(fixes the import-law violation in the graph status route that slipped
through the wave-3 merge verification).
Capture wiring (agent onStepFinish -> persist seam, plan-block emission)
lands next as master seam work; the streams start against these shapes.
Seam from the state-class strip: renderGraphContext tags nodes with raw
latest-quiz outcomes ([miss] / [dont-know] / [correct] / [never probed]);
50-graph-context.md still taught the deleted state classes ([missed] /
[known] / [candidate]). Re-aligned, guidance unchanged.
Schema: GraphNode + ExtractedProposition carry 'name' — a short 2-6 word
header, the rendering handle. Node theory made explicit: a node is an
objective world-facing fact; the learner's relationship to it lives
entirely in the event ledger (state labels are derived, never stored).
Extractor + auditor instructions enforce it — misconceptions state the
wrong idea itself as a claim, never 'the learner believes Y'. Legacy
ledger lines without a name derive one from the statement on read.
graph-view: labels use the name; the detail panel shows name as header
and statement as body.
MODELS in config.ts is now THE single tuning table: model id + OpenRouter
reasoning effort for teacher/researcher/demoBuilder/visualMaker/extractor/
auditor. .env.local is secrets-only (LH_* model vars removed; all sub-agents
previously had NO reasoning setting -> provider-default unbounded thinking,
the extraction token burn). One factory (src/agent/models.ts modelFor) wires
all six call sites; test injection unchanged. EXTRACTION.everyNQuizAnswers
moved to a config literal too. Plus the §5 one-line-per-seam logging in the
extraction pipeline: pipeline start, extractor/auditor start + per-step,
audit kept, merged — previously silent until completion, which made live
runs look like they never fired.
The shell now imports through exactly two barrels, enforced by
import/no-restricted-paths (npm run lint):
components/** -> "@/src/core" (pure core API, browser-safe)
app/** -> "@/src/core" + "@/src/server" (server entries)
Zone violations are lint errors with architecture-pointer messages; the
pure-core modules (contracts, question-core, plan-tree, phases, pending,
math-delims, ui-message) may never import agent/server/store.
Supporting moves (direction: IO layers -> core):
- core/index.ts: the core public API barrel
- core/ui-message.ts: moved from src/agent (it was shell-facing all along)
- quiz/ask input zod schemas moved agent/tools -> core/question-core
(the question contract, alongside the grading logic)
- ChatRecord/ChatSummary moved store/chats -> core/contracts (single schema)
- GraphSnapshot/NodeStateClass moved core/graph -> core/contracts (the
/api/graph payload IS a contract; the pure renderer needs only these)
- src/server/{chats,graph,jobs}.ts + index.ts: thin server entries for the
transport layer; GET /api/graph's fold side-effect now lives behind
graphView() instead of inline in the route
Gates: tsc clean, 190/190 tests, eslint clean (law verified to fire on
store/agent/subpath violations), production build clean.
(Repo repair en route: a git object (app/chat/[id] tree) was missing from
the object store — reconstructed byte-exactly via mktree from its blob;
the broken node_modules that stalled the build was cleanly reinstalled.)
The teaching agent no longer runs on pi. Stack:
- ToolLoopAgent (ai@7) + OpenRouter (OPENROUTER_API_KEY), model via LH_MODEL,
default anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.5 with reasoning tokens
- quiz/ask_user_question = client-side tools (no server execute): the call
lands as a typed tool part in input-available state; the card grades via
src/core/question-core.ts; addToolOutput sends the verdict; the teacher's
reaction continues the same assistant message
- resume-mid-quiz is free: the pending tool part persists in the transcript
- persistence: one JSON per chat (data/chats/), full UIMessage transcripts,
saved onFinish (also on abort)
- UI: AI Elements (owned copy-paste components, pruned to the five in use)
+ button-based QuizCard/AnsweredCard (ask answers never graded)
- pi fully removed: TUI, extensions, Fastify+WS server, bridge, custom
protocol all deleted (recoverable from git history)
- tests: question-core units carry over; chat-flow integration drives
handleChatRequest with MockLanguageModelV4 (48 tests, zero tokens);
render smoke tests guard the cards (renderToStaticMarkup)
Carried over unchanged: teacher system prompt, question-core, schema/
ledger/derive/extract pipeline, data model.
