All Linux setup, WSL launches/diagnostics, service actions, builds and checks are paused. Preserve the existing configuration, verified offline inputs and evidence. Windows/product work continues. Ubuntu26.04 is installed as WSL2; one actual root shell passed. User-directed VirtioProxy configuration remains exact, but both first launch and one post-compiler persistent root retry failed before guest execution with Wsl/Service/CreateInstance/CreateVm/0x800705b4. VirtioProxy network tests therefore remain unexecuted. A distinct root-authorized WslService-only restart failed because the service could not be opened/stopped; it remains Running. Hyper-V Compute event access separately required elevated rights. No elevation workaround, further guest launch or other service change followed.
After the user resumes Linux work, the remaining prerequisite is service access/VM startup. Do not repeatedly reinstall Ubuntu or re-run unchanged launch attempts. Keep AmneziaWG immutable, including no inspection, as user issue1 comment328 directs. No pending local WSL installer/client, apt/dpkg operation or Linux Cargo exists.
Completed setup and prepared inputs
Ordinary wsl --install Ubuntu-26.04 --no-launch --version 2 completed exit0 at14:36:46UTC. Image415,361,247 bytes matches official catalog SHA256 96c7f5fb28a7fe28245331f9bfbe4375f18dd29a4850116ad3c4f60f6700c55c. Root shell proved Ubuntu26.04 LTS/resolute and x86_64 kernel6.18.33.2-microsoft-standard-WSL2. Initial capacity4.46GB was increased through nondeleting NTFS compression:282 generated executables retained every SHA256. Earlier incremental compression was intentionally interrupted; exact deletion attempts were rejected before execution.
All five native Rust1.98.1 component archives are downloaded and individually SHA256 verified:129,992,688 bytes total. All60 concrete README apt prerequisites/dependencies are downloaded with SHA256 checks:80,287,656 bytes. Ubuntu compressed index matches signed InRelease's size/hash; actual GPG signature verification in the guest is still required before any package installation. Toolchains/dependencies have not been installed and no Linux compilation/application pass exists. Current backing disk had8.90GB free at15:03; remeasure before unpacking/building.
Configuration and evidence
User comment316's mirrored+DNS-tunneling trial was verified at runtime but had onlyloopback/no routes and failed DNS/HTTPS. Newer comment328 superseded it with only [wsl2] networkingMode=virtioproxy. Exact old bytes are backed up; current SHA256 5D8F32148682FEF35DABB4F506F1B206EB56DA8B9CB94589A530F7588C8164D6. No VPN/adapter/registry/firewall change occurred. The post-compiler retry did not fix the CreateVm timeout, so concurrent Cargo alone does not explain it.
harness/experiments/wsl-postboot-9e8r6t-20260911/ contains small setup, preparation and service-reset archives, each with entry/archive SHA256 manifests and README. Preserve failed rustfmt DNS download and encoded-URL planner attempt separately from subsequent verified success. Package blobs/full distro images stay private.
